A recently released video by the Sisters of Charity of Immaculate Conception reflects on the legacy, vision, and future of the religious order of women established in 1854 in Saint John, New Brunswick.
“Blessing the Future” explores the SCIC charism, mission and history, which spans more than 170 years in Canada, Peru and Ireland – including in Saskatchewan and in Edmonton.
Sisters of the SCIC religious community have served in various capacities in Saskatchewan, as recorded by Sr. Rose Ketchum, SCIC, in the Encyclopedia of Saskatchewan.
“The SCIC first came to Saskatchewan in 1906, when three sisters arrived in Prince Albert to care for and teach the children at St. Patrick’s Orphanage. Holy Family Hospital was constructed in 1910, and the first patient arrived on Christmas Day that same year. The sisters were involved in the work of the hospital until it was closed in 1997,” wrote Sr. Rose Ketchum, who is retired in Saskatoon.
“Over the years, the sisters also responded to other needs in Saskatchewan: in Regina they operated Rosary Hall, a residence for young women, from 1921 to 1968; in Holdfast, they taught from 1924 to 1976,” she wrote.
In Saskatoon, SCIC sisters provided leadership in the Catholic Health Association of Saskatchewan (CHAS) beginning in 1988. Sr. Anne Collins, SCIC, served as CHAS executive director for many years. As well, the sisters were involved in parental and pastoral care in Saskatoon from 1988 to 1998, as well as in journalism, including the work of Sr. Roma De Robertis for the Prairie Messenger weekly Catholic newspaper, and in university chaplaincy from 1993 to 2002.
“The sisters’ living heritage embraces the person and gospel of Jesus, as expressed through the spirituality of Saints Vincent de Paul, Louise de Marillac and Elizabeth Ann Seton,” summarizes the order’s website – https://sistersofcharityic.com.
