Development and Peace-Caritas Canada (DPCC) is sending an eight-person delegation to the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), to be held in November in Belém, Brazil.
DPCC’s participation in COP30 is a step in strengthening its commitment to the fight against climate change. Having been present in Brazil for several decades, DPCC representatives will leverage ties with local communities and international partners to bring civil society demands to the forefront.
COP30 is a key mobilization moment for the global Turn Debt into Hope Jubilee campaign and for celebrating Laudato Si’, the encyclical that the late Pope Francis published ten years ago, which remains relevant today. DPCC will pursue its call for justice on debt, particularly ecological debt.
The delegation comprises the following members of DPCC’s national council and staff:
- Most Rev. Martin Laliberté, Bishop of Trois Rivières and member of the international programs committee of he DPCC national council
- Most Rev. Jon Hansen, Bishop of Mackenzie-Fort Smith and member of the in-Canada programs committee of he DPCC national council
- Gabrielle Dupuis, president of the DPCC national council
- Luke Stocking, DPCC Director of Public Engagement
- Dean Dettloff, DPCC Advocacy and Research Officer
- Anne Catherine Kennedy, DPCC Program Officer for Brazil and Colombia
- Raphael Freston, Animator for British Columbia and Yukon Facilitator, and DPCC staff union representative
- Romina Acosta Bimbrera, DPCC Communications and Public Relations Advisor
“I am motivated to participate because it is important that voices other than those of political and financial interests be heard to guide and inform the decisions that need to be made on climate issues,” said Bishop Martin Laliberté.
At COP30, the delegation will witness official negotiations and take participate in civil society mobilization spaces. Standing partners attending the People’s Summit, DPCC will highlight their demands for ecological, social and economic justice.
“I am particularly interested in hearing from those most directly impacted by climate change and current global responses. My objective is to amplify their perspectives both during COP30 and upon my return to Canada,” said DPCC National Council President Gabrielle Dupuis.
COP30 events in which DPCC will participate include: “Responding to the Global South Catholic Bishops Conferences’ Call for Climate Justice” on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 3:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m ET .
