By Marte Clemente Nogot, State Deputy, Saskatchewan Knights of Columbus
We all know Christmas is a festival that is celebrated for the birth of Jesus on the 25th day of the month of December every year. In the cold winters of the northern hemisphere, Christmas brings forth the warmth of festivities. People rejoice with great enthusiasm and celebrate Christmas with their families and friends annually.
But at such times of joy, we should remember about those who are much less fortunate than us. Amidst all the shopping for gifts, we should also remember to make a voluntary contribution to uplift this society.
So this Christmas, we might just be Santa Claus for someone who really needs help. A gift as small as a blanket or warm food might cheer them up more than one can imagine. Even children can make old people happy just by talking to them and cheering them up, a little smile, a word of cheer, a bit of love from someone near, a little gift from one held dear… all these small acts will make people around us feel merry Christmas.
As a Knight we put Christ in the centre of our heart and we follow him: this is one reason why we have the will of volunteering not only to help people but to love all people around us. The world cannot save itself and this is the message of Christmas, this is the message of why Jesus Christ was born — the Son of God expressing the love of God to all of us.
So all my Brother Knights will do all the good we can, by all the means we can, in all the ways we can, in all the places we can, at all the times we can, to all the people we can, and as long as ever we can, to make this world a better place to live in.
We also continue to offer a gift from the Knights of Columbus: a one-year free online membership, which is open to all Catholic men, 18 years of age or older and a practicing Catholic. Once you join, the benefits of membership extend to you and your family.
Please note that we do this to help our parishes and our communities. How? Simply by giving an hour – or as much as you want to give – towards initiatives and programs/activities you want to support.
Go to www.kofc.org/joinus for this free online membership, using the promotional code: BLESSEDMCGIVNEY
On behalf of the Saskatchewan State Council, Merry Christmas to all of you.
VIVAT JESUS!
