Surrounded by family and supporters from many communities, Huy Le was installed as an acolyte Sept. 6, another step on his journey of discerning priestly ordination.

Having completed his studies at Christ the King Seminary in Mission, B.C., and a summer of mission service both in Saskatoon and in northern dioceses, Le is now serving a pastoral year of service under the mentorship of Fr. Matthew Ramsay at parishes in Unity, Wilkie, and Tramping Lake, SK.

Representatives of those Unity-area parishes attended the installation celebration in support of Le, as did members of  Our Lady of La Vang Vietnamese Catholic community and Le’s home parish of St. Peter the Apostle in Saskatoon, and those he served with this summer from St. Mary Mission and Outreach Ministry. Representatives of the Sts. Benedict and Scholastica diocesan formation program, which Le was part of in 2021-2022, also attended the evening celebration.

In the homily, Bishop Mark Hagemoen described the acolyte’s role of practical service at the altar, saying it is grounded in “Eucharistic charity.”

“An acolyte assumes some of the responsibilities formally associated with carrying out the proper ministries assigned at the altar. He may be an extraordinary minister of holy communion if needed and in particular circumstances may expose the Blessed Sacrament,” noted Hagemoen, stressing the spiritual significance of the role

“The acolyte is called to a deep reverence, a deepening reverence for the Eucharist and to conform his life to Christ’s self-giving sacrifice,” said Hagemoen, before receiving Le into the new ministry.

Addressing the candidate, the bishop said: “This summit and source of the church’s life is the Eucharist, which builds up the Christian community and makes it grow. It is your responsibility to assist myself and the priests and the deacons in carrying out their ministry and as a special ministry to give holy communion to the faithful at the liturgy and to the sick.”

“Because you are specially called to this ministry, you should strive to live more fully by the Lord’s sacrifice to be moulded more perfectly in its likeness. You should seek to understand the deep spiritual meaning of what you do so that you may offer yourself daily to God as a spiritual sacrifice acceptable to him through Jesus Christ,” he said.

“In performing your ministry, bear in mind that you share the one bread with your brothers and sisters, so you form one body with them. Show a sincere love for Christ’s mystical body, God’s holy people, especially for the weak, the needy, and the sick. Be obedient to the command which the Lord gave to his apostles at the last supper. Love one another as I have loved you.”

After receiving a vessel of bread, the newly-installed acolyte then joined in service at the altar during celebration of the Eucharistic rite.

Born in Vietnam in 1999, Le moved to Canada in 2011 with his family – his father (who died in 2019), his mother and younger sister. His paternal grandmother, uncles, cousins and other relatives are also living in Saskatoon.

Le has been actively involved in the Our Lady of La Vang Vietnamese Catholic Community in Saskatoon, as an altar server and youth leader. He studied at the University of Saskatchewan and St Thomas More College in Saskatoon from 2017 to 2022, finishing undergraduate and philosophy pre-requisites. In 2021-2022, Le was part of the Sts. Benedict and Scholastica diocesan spiritual and human formation program in Saskatoon.

Le was part of the diocesan young adult Jubilee pilgrimage to Rome in May 2025, and in the summer of 2025 he served at St. Augustine Parish in Humboldt, SK.

This summer, Le was one of the young adults who participated in  Sts. Benedict and Scholastica mission outreach at St. Mary Parish in Saskatoon’s core neighbourhood, as well as in the northern dioceses of Keewatin-Le Pas and Mackenzie Fort Smith,
