Fr. Daniel Muyres, OSB, of St. Peter’s Abbey, Muenster, died July 28, 2025 at Humboldt District Hospital, at the age of 90 years.
Fr. Daniel Muyres was born Jan 14, 1935 at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Humboldt, SK, the eldest of six children of Albertina (Zimmerman) and Frank Muyres.
He grew up on the family farm 1.5 miles northwest of St. Gregor, SK, and attended the old one-room St. Gregor School from 1941 to 1951, with Henry Murphy as his teacher for the entire 10 years. He took Grade 11 and 12 at St. Peter’s College at the Benedictine Abbey in Muenster, graduating in 1953.
After completing his first-year university at St. Peter’s College, he joined the Benedictine Order, entering the novitiate at St. Peter’s Abbey, before going on to study at St. John’s Abbey, Collegeville, Minnesota, from 1955 to 1961.
Fr. Daniel Muyres was ordained to the priesthood on June 10, 1961 at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Muenster, by Saskatoon Bishop Francis Klein.
Fr. Daniel taught English, Latin, and science, and helped with sports activities at St. Peter’s College from 1961 to 1964.
He became assistant in the business office and continued to teach several subjects at the college until 1967. He served as business manager at St. Peter’s Abbey, College, Press, and Farm until 1989.
During this time, Fr. Daniel was also weekend assistant priest at St. Augustine Parish in Humboldt (1969-70), Bruno (1970-71), and served as pastor at St. Joseph Parish, Fulda, from 1972 to 1974.
He also attended Saint Paul University in Ottawa for a year to receive his master’s degree in Pastoral Studies – Counselling.
Fr. Daniel was pastor at St. Scholastica Burr (1975-1986); Assumption Parish at Marysburg (1986-1988) and Holy Rosary Parish at LeRoy (1988-89).
In 1989, after serving as the Abbey’s business manager for 22 years, he became resident pastor at Sacred Heart Parish, Watson, and continued as pastor of the LeRoy parish, and in 1985, Guardian Angels Parish at Englefeld was added to his cluster of parishes.
Fr. Daniel was also the financial manager for the Muenster Abbacy from 1992 to 1998, when he became pastor of parishes at Pilger, Middle Lake, and Fulda. In 2000, St. Joseph Parish, Fulda was closed, but he continued as pastor at Pilger and Middle Lake until 2004.
In 2003, Fr. Daniel became chaplain at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Humbold, and then at the new Humbold District Hospital until 2020.
He served as pastor at St. Peter Parish in Muenster from 2004 to 2015, when he retired.
In his retirement he undertook grounds and yard work around the Abbey, watched webinars and listened to spiritual talks on his computer. He moved to Quill Plains Lodge in Watson from November 2023 until February 2024, when he moved to St. Mary’s Villa in Humboldt, where he resided until his death.
Fr Daniel is survived by the monastic community of St. Peter’s Abbey in Muenster; his sisters Yvonne (Nick) Schweighardt and Delores (Frank) Steier; sister-in-law Patricia Lang, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was pre-deceased by his parents, Frank and Albertina Muyres; brothers Richard (Agnes) Muyres and Kenneth Muyres; sister Sr. Jane Muyres, OSU, and brother-in-law Frank Lang.
Prayers for Fr. Daniel Muyres were held Aug. 4 at St. Peter Cathedral Parish, Muenster, with Brother Basil Schaan, OSB, presiding. The Mass of Christian Burial for Fr. Daniel was held Aug. 5 at St. Augustine Parish, Humboldt, SK, with Fr. Demetrius Wasylyniuk, OSB, presiding. Interment followed at St. Peter’s Abbey Cemetery, Muenster, SK.
