St. Thomas More (STM) Campus Minister Michael MacLean provides background to a new teepee installation at STM following Ash Wednesday Mass:

“Our STM chapel, is situated on Treaty Six Lands, Nehiyaw Territory, and the homeland of the Métis.

“You will notice a new addition to our chapel. The teepee was erected for Tuesday’s Achimo 2022 storytelling event.

“Through a long process of discernment, we have been encouraged by our STM Indigenous Advisory Circle to house the teepee here in the Chapel, as it is a sacred place of prayer and reflection, as is our chapel.

“Reconciliation is the work we must take on as a Catholic Church in Canada, and we take that work seriously here at STM.  We respect and reaffirm our relationship with the First Nations and Metis people of this area, as we acknowledge that we are all treaty people.

“Thank you to Elders AJ and Patricia Felix, and family, from the Sturgeon Lake First Nation, for all the work in the production and installation of this wonderful teepee for STM.”
