John answered them, “I baptize with water; but there is one among you whom you do not recognize, the one who is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.” (John 1:26-27) – Readings: Third Sunday of Advent
You don’t know, what you don’t know.
Crossing a field full of landmines knowingly is intimidating. Discovering you have unknowingly walked into a minefield is quite another thing.
The world of separation and divorce is riddled with mines people don’t anticipate – reduced pensions, legal fees, unexpected revelations, lost friendships. Faced with challenges like these, one might ask, what joy does this Advent Sunday offer?
John’s declaration, “among you stands one whom you do not know” reminds us that God is present among us in ways hidden, extraordinary and deeply personal! There’s great strength and joy in meditating on John’s testimony.
