[Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools] – Over 450 Special Olympic athletes competed in a day-long track and field meet May 22 at E.D. Feehan Catholic High School in Saskatoon. This is the only Special Olympic track meet in the province.
The E.D. Feehan school community has hosted this event for over 40 years. The staff and entire student body — some 550 volunteers — run the event. This involves officiating, timing races, record-keeping and escorting athletes.
Athletes aged 5 to 75 will compete in a variety of events including ball throw, shot put, 50-metre and 100-metre dashes, and long jump.
The Special Olympics provides people with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to realize their potential, develop their physical fitness, demonstrate courage, and experience friendship through athletic participation.
